Altadena Main Library

In early 2024, Nikki Winslow, Director of the Altadena Library District, reached out to ask me whether I would create artwork for the library’s upcoming renovation. I had retired from commission work.

When I saw the plans for the new look, and heard her compelling vision, I was glad to come out of retirement; temporarily. The result was the largest watercolor of my 50-plus-year career: an exterior view of the library measuring approximately 5' x 2'. Seen here is a detail of the painting.

I also completed four smaller paintings of the interior. For these, I returned to a playful, colorful style I had worked in some 50 years earlier.

The renovation, scheduled to be complete in 2027, will preserve the library’s iconic mid-century modern design while welcoming future generations with a next-century usability.
