Art Eaton by Fire

On the afternoon of January 7, 2025, fire erupted in Eaton Canyon in east Altadena, CA. On January 8th, mandatory evacuation orders were issued to residents on the eastern half of Altadena. It quickly spread westward, torching houses and businesses across the entire breadth of the foothill community.

The home of Keni Arts was burned to the ground along with thousands of his Altadena neighbors.

Keni had previously painted en plein air hundreds of homes and businesses in Altadena and neighboring Pasadena. Now, he’s returning again to those sites with his paint kit. He is documenting the charred remains with the intent to create *beauty from ashes.

*[God] will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. Isaiah 61:3

Keni Arts has been painting en plein air (outdoors) for over 50 years. He has captured street scenes across America, in Africa, Brazil, Canada, England, Germany and Mexico. Still, some of his favored sites are street scenes of Altadena and Pasadena.

When not on the road painting, he worked in film and television as a set painter and scenic artist until his retirement from the industry.

Keni has received commendations from local and state officials for his art and community service.
