Supporting Space

Unpainted spaces can speak volumes.

‘Negative space’ in art is a term used to describe the space surrounding a subject.

When the Oscars are handed out for movies, an Oscar goes to the best actor, usually the lead actor. However, there are other actors who appear on screen who support the lead. When awards are given to the second group of individuals, they are not handed out to the negative actors, but to the supporting actors.

Calling the space surrounding the subject of a painting negative is a negative way to look at any portion of a painting. I prefer to call it ‘Supporting Space’. Therefore, I have awarded color to the supporting space in Shaker’s Seaters.
